After exporting JPG from your NEF, use the Image Compressor to optimize.

- 1
Add your NEF file
Drop or select a .nef file. Files up to 50MB process locally in your browser — nothing uploaded.
- 2
Run the conversion
NEF files are Nikon's proprietary RAW format — sensor data plus metadata, not a rendered image. Use Nikon NX Studio (free from Nikon), Lightroom, Capture One, RawTherapee, or darktable to open, adjust, and export as JPG. Each tool applies Nikon's color profiles and lens corrections during export.

One click saves the result as a .jpg file. Your original file stays on your device.
Why convert NEF to JPG?
NEF is Nikon's format for editing and archiving — it stores the full sensor readout at 12 or 14 bits per channel, giving you maximum latitude for exposure, color, and highlight/shadow recovery. JPG is for sharing and web use. Process your NEF with Nikon's Picture Control (Standard, Vivid, Neutral, Monochrome, etc.) or your own preset, then export — the JPG is the deliverable.
Common NEF to JPG use cases
- Exporting Nikon Z9, Z8, Z7, or D850 NEFs for a wedding or event client as delivery-ready JPGs
- Converting Nikon D-series NEFs (D750, D500, D810) shot in the field to JPG for blog posts or social media
- Producing print-ready JPGs from NEF portraits while keeping the NEFs archived for future re-edits
- Publishing Nikon wildlife or astrophotography RAWs as JPG galleries on SmugMug, Flickr, or a personal portfolio site
What file size to expect
A 45-megapixel Nikon Z7II or Z9 NEF (14-bit losslessly compressed) is typically 50-60 MB. The JPG export at quality 92 is usually 10-18 MB; at quality 85 (web-friendly) it's 4-8 MB. Older 24-megapixel Nikons (D750, Z6) produce NEFs around 25-30 MB and JPGs at 4-8 MB at quality 92.
Technical notes: NEF → JPG
Nikon NEFs use a compressed-lossy, compressed-lossless, or uncompressed mode (set in-camera). They embed sensor readouts in Nikon's proprietary NEF structure plus Picture Control settings, white balance, focus info, and GPS if tagged. Nikon NX Studio applies Nikon's native color rendering; third-party tools (Lightroom, Capture One) use their own interpretation of NEF data, which can produce slightly different colors. For color-critical work matching in-camera JPGs, use NX Studio. For maximum flexibility, use Lightroom or Capture One.
Compatibility and browser support
JPG output works everywhere. NEF input requires specialized software: Nikon NX Studio (free, official), Adobe Lightroom (paid subscription), Capture One (paid), Capture One Express for Nikon (free), darktable (free/open-source), RawTherapee (free/open-source). macOS Preview and Windows Photos can preview recent NEFs but not convert to JPG cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Free Nikon software?
Nikon NX Studio is free and supports every Nikon NEF variant including the Z9, Z8, Z7II, Z6II, and all D-series bodies. Download from Nikon's support site.
Will quality drop?
JPG is lossy, but at quality 90%+ the difference from your NEF processing is imperceptible at normal viewing distances.
Batch convert multiple NEFs?
Yes — Lightroom's export presets, Capture One's process recipes, or NX Studio's batch conversion all handle dozens or hundreds of NEFs with consistent settings.
NX Studio vs Lightroom for NEF?
NX Studio matches Nikon's in-camera JPG rendering exactly (same Picture Controls). Lightroom and Capture One apply their own color profiles — better for creative flexibility, but colors differ from the camera's JPG preview.
Can I preserve EXIF from the NEF?
Yes, in all major RAW editors. Lightroom and NX Studio preserve camera settings, GPS, date/time, and lens info in the exported JPG.
Can I convert NEF directly in a browser?
No — NEFs require Nikon's proprietary decoder with per-sensor calibration. Browser-based conversion isn't possible today. Use NX Studio, then come back and optimize the JPG for web.
